Each IPMS/USA National Convention has a dedicated decal sheet, given out free to attendees. The 2016 IPMS Nationals was hosted by the Mid-Carolina Chapter and the decal sheet was sponsored by Sprue Brothers Models and with artwork by Mighty Tiger Motorsports.

The sheet covers a wide range of subjects, but the two of interest to USAF modeller are:-

  • F-100D 56-3180 "Sweet Sydney/Pure Hell" from the 614th TFS based at Phan Rang AB during early 1970. This was painted in the South East Asian Scheme, comprising Dark Green FS34079, Medium Green (FS34102) and Tan (FS30219) upper surfaces with Light Grey (FS36622) lower surfaces. it carried white "VP" tail codes and a red fin cap and panel under the windshield. "Sweet Sydney" was on the left side of the nose and "Pure Hell" on the right, both in yellow. This was the mount of Jim Hamilton; and
  • F-51D 44-73699 from the 157th FS, South Carolina ANG and based at Congaree Air Base during 1949. Overall laquered aluminium with a gloss black spinner and and dark blue tail flash.

The sheet is printed by Cartograf and is in perfect register. Instructions comprise a single side view for the F-51D and left and right side views for the F-100D (but no upper surface scheme).

For a free sheet given away at a Model Convention, it is clear how much effort went into the design of the sheet. If you can find one, get it!
