What's New (click on a highlighted link or picture for more info)

12th November 2008

I will be leaving for SMW on Friday, but before then, here is another small batch of reviews.  I've been working flat out for the past month to get my builds finished, and should have 7 new F-4's and 7 new F-16's on the various displays.

Catching up on some kit reviews, Xtradecal sheet X049-72 covers an F-16C from Aviano AB as displayed at the 1997 RIAT.  Next, sheet X72083 covers an interesting C-47D from the 49th TFW at Spangdahlem.  And finally, sheet X72090 covers A-7Ks from most of the operational ANG units and nicely complements the recently released Hobby Boss A-7K.

See you all at Scale Modelworld - stop by the SIG stand in Hall 3 and say hello!

Well, the Nationals is rapidly approaching, and it's all hands to the pumps.  As we have two displays to sort (USAF SIG and F-4 SIG), there's plenty on the go - I have 6 F-16s and 5 F-4s which are rapidly approaching the painting stage...  However, I thought it would be good to carry on with the updates, so here are some more, mainly reviews.

First up is an oldie - Two Bobs sheet 72-002 with markings for 3 F-16's from the 57th FW in 3 different Aggressor schemes.  These are the earlier schemes (note that this sheet dates to 2000).  Next - to fix an error, I posted the wrong pic of Two Bobs sheet 72-075.  I've fixed it below, and also relinked it here.  Second is sheet 72-064, which covers F-16Cs from the Fighter Weapons School at Nellis AFB.

Next up is the start of my trawl through some recent resin accessories, commencing with the Dangerous TARS pod (CO72001), as used by a number of US ANG units on their F-16's.

Next, we have some of the recently released Modern Hobbies LLC resin, including MH-001 (AN/ALQ-188 Pod), MH-002 (MXU-648 Baggage Pod) and MH-010 (AIM-120C AMRAAM). Plenty more to follow!

Next, another kit finished - this time my Hasegawa F-4D in the special "Flipper" scheme as used by the 93rd TFS, 482nd TFW.

And finally, I've updated the "Attack" section of the Order Of Battle.

11th September 2008

Just got back from a couple of weeks in Florida (Orlando) - I was quite surprised how things have changed since my last visit to the US (back in early 2004).  Back then, all the big stores (Target, Wal-Mart etc) used to carry models, but now the only place I found was K-Mart, which had a small space dedicated... I did find a model shop (a Hobby Town) but had to drive 60 miles to Daytona Beach to reach it!

As a result, not too much on the modelling front, although Alex Hunger/Phil Butler/Haydn Hughes have informed me that we can expect a Ford F350 "Bobtail" in 1/72nd from Retrokit "soon"...

I see we've now passed 7,000 hits - great stuff!

Final thing to note is that Greg Williams from Modern Hobbies LLC has put up some pics of my F-16C - I used his AIM-9L and AIM-120B... Go take a look - and spend some money with him whilst you're at it!

23rd August 2008

Interest via the ARC link has been fantastic - we're now on 6,700 hits, which is 900 in the past 3 days - fantastic!

More new stuff - my 18th AS F-16C in the "Advanced Flanker" scheme is here, and I've also uploaded some pics from my recent visit to the Luchtvaart Hobby Shop... If you're ever in the Netherlands, it should be a mandatory visit!

And a little housekeeping - I've removed everything from the index page pre-July and put it into the 2008 Archive.

21st August 2008

I never realised how much visibility the front page of ARC would give us - Steve Bamford kindly linked our site today, and since then we've had over 500 hits!  Thanks to all who came to check us out - hope you like what you see!  Keep checking back, and why not join our forum?!

Also, apologies to all who found the site dated 6th July earlier this evening!  I have been trying to add a new gateway page and this caused a small amount of trouble, resulting in me having to restore the entire website from backup!

The new gateway should be working, although it depends on your browser as to whether you see it or not.  www.usaf-sig.org should bring you to a nice front page with a random pic from our gallery!  Give it a try and see if it works!

Finally, a quick call out to Alexandre Zart from www.scalemodelbuilding.org - a new site dedicated to providing a search engine for modellers.  It's only small at present but will grow with time - give it a try!  I've also added a direct link to our menu bar - just click on "Search".

Today sees a major milestone in the SIG - our Leader, Haydn Hughes, has finally had his arm twisted to provide some articles!  And a bumper crop too... Firstly, a review of the new Hobby Boss TA-7C, built as an A-7K of the 4450th TG.

Next is Haydn's F-4D 66-465 of the 7th TFS, 49th TFW. Next up is an F-105F 62-432 of the 561st TFS, 23rd TFW.  Next we have C-7A 61-2592 of the 700th TAS, 94th TAW.  Then we have A-10A 75-0262 of the 57th FWW in the short-lived "Jaws" scheme. And finally, Haydn's A-7K 79-0456 of the 4450th TG as covered in the Hobby Boss kit review.

Now that Haydn has "seen the light", I hope to be showcasing more of his talent over the next few months!

14th August 2008

I have started to make some changes to the format of the site.  The main area being worked on at the moment is the Order Of Battle section.  At present, the main page is slow to load and not of much use.  To improve this, I am in the process of reformatting the individual type pages.  These will now have a table with the relevant section of the Order Of Battle, with links to completed models in the table.  This should make it much easier to find what you are interested in and to see what we have completed!

Sections completed so far are Bombers and Fighters - keep checking back as I will continue to update over the next week or so.

As with everything, this will take some time, and the Order Of Battle list is also incomplete - so please email me if you can add to the list!

11th August 2008

As promised, the remaining 2 decal sheets from Wolfpak - 72-006, covering the  P-3C, EP-3E, SU-15TM, EA-7L, C-119L, F-16C and A-10A, and 72-007, covering the F-15S, F-15K, F-22A, AC-47D, AC-130U, F4U-5N.

9th August 2008

As usual, I have to apologise for the lack of updates.  I'm working away from home a lot at the moment and just don't have time to keep the updates going... As a result, this one is again limited to decal sheets, although I've got a few more to come...

Firstly, 2 sheets from Two Bobs... 72-075 covers an F-16C from the 79th FS painted up for the 2005 TMOTA, whilst 72-076 covers more Aggressor aircraft from the 18th FS.  Two sheets from Draw decal - 72s-Cessna5 covering an O-2 and 72s-DET-3 with Hamilton Standard prop markings.  And finally a sheet from WolfPak - 72-005 with markings for KC-135R, F-16C, A-10A and a B-24D.

I do have some kits to review - 1/72nd Academy F-16C, 1/72n ICM Mig-29C ("9-13") and 1/72nd Trumpeter F-105G - these will follow when I figure out a way to photograph the sprues...

Other new stuff?  Well, the ex-AMT/ERTL X/YB-35 is now out from Italeri - it was £32.99 in my local model show and Hannants have it at the same price...

6th July 2008

Firstly, we've now reached 5,000 hits!  Thanks to all who check out the site on a regular basis...

Next, we have some more decal sheets which are quite interesting.  First up is Astra Decals who have released a new sheet (ASD-7214) covering F-16C/D's from the 22nd FS and 23rd FS at Spangdahlem.  Next is a really interesting sheet from AeroMaster (AN72228) which provides USAF and U.S. Air Force markings in Insignia Blue - this will be really useful as a lot of kit sheets don't use the right blue.  Finally, we have a sheet from Techmod covering US "Stars 'n' Bars" as used by most services from 1943 until the current day (72410).
